Glossary

This page will try to explain some of the terms used in RC racing. The list is not exhaustive, but more will be added over the next few weeks as the FAQ section of the site is developed - so keep checking!)
If you heard a term which isn't there, let Trevor know - either at the track, or send an e-mail.
Motor pinion
A small gear cog which fits on the motor shaft and transfers the drive to to the car via a larger cog (spur gear). These make the primary reduction gear.
The number of teeth and the size of the teeth (pitch) varies - and not all will fit together. Typical pinion gear for a standard motor has 28 teeth of pitch 48. Pitch 64 is also seen.
Toe-in
"Toe-in" describes the angle of the wheels to the car (viewed from above), measured at axle height (the mid-point of the wheel) and refers to a pair of wheels (either the front wheels or the rear wheels).
Special guages are available to ensure accurate measurement.

Rear toe-in improves straight line stability.

Trim
"Trim" is the adjustment to steering and accellerator/brake that can be made at the transmitter.
"Stick" type transmitters have a small sliding adjuster beneath the right hand (steering) control and a similar adjuster to the right of the left hand (accelerator/brake/reverse) control.
Only minor adjustment is possible and the car should be set up so that the adjusters are in the centre position for normal use.
"Steering Wheel" type have adjusters located around the wheel - see manufacturers instruction manual.
