Frequently Asked Questions - steering

How can I get my car to drive in a straight line?
First, the obvious!
- Is the car on a flat surface?
If you are testing the car on the road or pavement and the surface is 'cambered' for water drainage, the car will follow the camber.
- Is the trim on the transmitter set correctly?
If a straight line can be achieved with a small amount of adjustment to the trim (up to half), no further adjustment is necessary.
- Is the steering servo set-up correctly?
- Remove the bodyshell
- Turn on the power to the transmitter
- Turn on the power to the car
- The front wheels should point straight ahead. Hold a ruler against the front and back wheels - they should be 'in-line' (check each side and allow for toe-in)
Adjust the position of the steering arm on the steering servo - it should move the same amount in each direction when the steering is operated at the transmitter, and is normally upright when the servo is placed flat on the chassis.
- Are the rods that connect the steering to the front wheels equal in length?
NB: Not all cars have adjustable connectors. Adjust the length of the linkages to each wheel (if possible).
Ideally, all components of the steering linkage should be able to move freely and have equal 'travel' in each direction.
- Re-set the front 'toe-in'
